Definition of ICT

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is generally regarded as the overlap of computer information and telecommunications technologies, and their applications. In this document the term ICT is used to indicate the whole range of technologies involved in information processing and electronic communications, including the internet, electronic mail and video-conferencing (Sacred Heart School, n.d).

I reviewed the policy of the Sacred Heart School that I found online, because I could not find a policy for a local school in my country.

1. Strengths (What makes the policy effective?)

  • The policy focuses on using ICT for education and not just acceptable use of ICT within the school.

  • The policy strives to ensure that each child achieves his/her potential in ICT.

  • The policy aims to lay the foundation for future learning across the curriculum as a whole.

(Sacred Heart School,n.d).

2. Weaknesses – (What makes it ineffective?)

  • Not clear on roles and responsibilities.

  • Not clear on how the policy will be enforced.

  • No guidelines on how the implementation of the policy will be measured.

(Sacred Heart School,n.d).

3. Opportunities – (What external opportunities contribute to success?)

  • ICT infrastructure costs are rapidly reducing, which will allow the school to invest more in ICT solutions to assist learning.

(Sacred Heart School,n.d).

4. Threats – (External threats that affect the effectiveness of the policy)

  • Lack of teacher support.

  • Complexity of ICT solutions.

(Sacred Heart School,n.d).

Barbados has implemented EduTech 2000 which was a project aimed at reforming primary and secondary curricula to produce more learner-centred pedagogies, and facilitate a move to ICT-oriented teacher professional development.

There has been a new effort in establishing computer labs and in bringing computers into classrooms. EduTech 2000 was strongly aligned towards enhancing teaching and learning through the redesign of the national primary and secondary curricula with ICT. Objectives in problem solving, conflict resolution, self-management, organisation and other social and emotional skills were pursued through the integration of various technologies. It was intended that these revised curricula be supported by authentic modes of assessment (Seepersad, R. 2015).
