Constructivist theories place much emphasis on the active learner. Learning only takes place when the learner actively explores his/her environment to change the environment in ways that can facilitate the discovery of meaning. (Information and Communication Technologies in Education - Unit 2, n.d.).

ICT tools that can be used in the classroom to enhance the teaching and learning process are:

  1. Internet; and

  2. Online learning management systems

With the internet we are able to go to several websites to do research or actively engage in learning activities e.g. You can use the Oxford Learning Owl website (http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading-owl/find-a-book) - which is part of the Oxford Learning Tree system – to teach children to read. On the website they provide books for children according to their age and their reading levels. The children can sit and read the books to a teacher or the book can be read via the website using a tablet computer.

An online learning management system (LMS) is a web-based technology used to plan, implement, and assess a specific learning process. Typically, a learning management system provides an instructor with a way to create and deliver content, monitor student participation, and assess student performance. A learning management system may also provide students with the ability to use interactive features such as threaded discussions, video conferencing, and discussion forums.
